The first books published in the steampunk genre were classified as a science fiction. Today, the literature is more along the lines of dystopian fiction but with a sunnier outlook on the future. The premise is that there is an alternate future that includes technology as we know it but with a Victorian-era flair. Steampunk novels have been written since the 1980's and enjoy much popularity still today.
