The first books published in the steampunk genre were classified as a science fiction. Today, the literature is more along the lines of dystopian fiction but with a sunnier outlook on the future. The premise is that there is an alternate future that includes technology as we know it but with a Victorian-era flair. Steampunk novels have been written since the 1980's and enjoy much popularity still today.

A list of popular young adult steampunk novels:

Looking Glass Wars trilogy by Frank Beddor

Infernal Devices series by Cassadra Clare

Finishing School series by Gail Carriger

Airman by Eoin Colfer

Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

Golden Compass trilogy by Philip Pullman
